drama preparation

The writing, rehearsing and performing of a play by learners of English.

PROCEDURE

1. Ongoing drama exercises:

  • relaxation, e.g. running in different ways --> listening skills,
  • concentration, e.g. typewriter: letters, pronunciation, spelling,
  • awakening imagination, e.g. learning texts and reciting them in different ways,
  • observation, e.g. watch, mime and describe exactly --> vocabulary, tenses

2. Playwriting:

  • establish topic through discussion of students' and teacher's suggestions
  • groups share writing - dtudents create their own roles
  • teacher acts as a consultant, making suggestions about content, correcting language

3. Rehearsing:

  • teacher checks pronunciation of words in text
  • students "overlearn" roles:
    • students prepare props, costumes
    • students rehearse (teacher as a consultant - avoids directing)

4. Performace: teacher and fellow students show appreciation !!!

5. Possible problems:

  • students have sometimes weird, unsuitable ideas - teacher advises tactfully
  • students speak too fast, too softly, pronunciation mistakes
  • students' memory fails - forget words - stress
  • back to audience
  • audience not tolerant/ may not understand
