We at IATEFL Poland were deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Peter Whiley, a colleague, friend, and guiding presence whose contributions will not be forgotten.
Peter was a cornerstone of our community for many years. Those who had the privilege of working alongside him will remember not only his dedication to the board, but also the care and thoughtfulness he brought to every task. As editor of our newsletter, he helped shape the voice of our organization, ensuring that ideas, achievements, and connections were shared with clarity and purpose. His work reflected both professionalism and quiet passion.
Beyond his formal roles, Peter gave generously of his time and energy to numerous special projects, always approaching them with commitment and creativity. He was someone who saw what needed to be done and simply stepped forward to do it—reliably, thoughtfully, and without seeking recognition.
Many will also remember the warmth and partnership he shared with his loving wife, Joanna. Together, they contributed not just effort, but heart, strengthening the sense of community that defines IATEFL Poland.
Peter’s legacy lives on in the structures he helped build, the initiatives he supported, and the people he inspired. He will be remembered with deep respect, gratitude, and affection.
Our thoughts are with Joanna and all who knew and loved him.

It was Peter Whiley who introduced me to IATEFL Poland. I still remember first hearing about the organization when he came to our teacher training college in Ciechanów carrying one of the conference bags, it immediately sparked my curiosity. He inspired me to join the ELT family and later, as a mentor, and eventually a colleague he continued to shape my professional path.
Then in the early years of 21st century he opened my eyes to drama as a pedagogic tool. I had the privilege of taking part in his workshops within the Music and Drama SIG and supporting the SIG’s online presence.
He was not only an inspiring teacher of British culture and history, but also someone who demanded depth and critical thinking. I often remember his feedback on my essays “a bit clichéd” which pushed me to think more deeply and express myself with greater originality. His lessons were full of charisma and ingenuity; he brought realia into the classroom and made learning vivid and memorable.
Peter was also a great friend and a deeply committed member of the IATEFL community. As Newsletter & E-Bulletin Editor for many years, he contributed enormously to professional exchange and development.
He also introduced ideas that became a valued part of conference life, such as organising quiz shows at IATEFL Poland conferences, including Family Feud, The Great Quiz, and The Weakest Link. These activities brought people together and added a unique sense of community and enjoyment to professional events.
He was also actively involved in the IATEFL Poland Warsaw Region Public Speaking Contest, contributing as a judge.
Peter Whiley will always remain in my memory as an inspiring educator, a dedicated professional, and above all, a great friend.
