Bringing Spoken Grammar into the Classroom

Jon Hird

Summary

The grammar of spoken English is in a number of ways different from the grammar of written English and is also different from much of the grammar that learners are generally taught. Through the brief analysis of an authentic dialogue, this practical session looks at some key features of spoken grammar and explores how we can introduce this into our teaching to help our learners better understand and use it. For each, we will look at simple and engaging practice exercises and activities. The session will throughout be illustrated with authentic examples of spoken grammar, including those from spoken-like social media.
