Reflecting on the first two years of the AI revolution

Kacper Łodzikowski Pearson Languages

Summary

Over the past two years, the use of AI in education, particularly in language teaching and learning, has seen unprecedented experimentation by teachers, students, and companies. Although some implementations have begun to unlock the full potential of AI for enhancing pedagogical practices, many have only superficially explored its possibilities. This session will showcase Pearson’s latest AI products, such as auto-graded homework and self-study speaking exercises, describing their functionality in plain language. Recent studies highlight numerous benefits of these tools but also reveal significant challenges, including ensuring data privacy, maintaining compliance, and managing risks of inequalities. We will discuss these challenges and the necessity for robust frameworks to ensure AI tools are used ethically and effectively, on the example of Pearson’s own principles for responsible AI use.
