PLENARY In this session, we will collaboratively consider methods to engage newcomers and their families through mindful practice and responsive reflection. We will also discuss health-centered pedagogy and ways to empower and support our students through social-emotional learning and feelings of belonging. Resources to support our own learning and mindful practice with participants.

Biodata

Dr. Denise Furlong holds an Ed.D. in Literacy Education with a concentration in educating multilingual learners from Rutgers University. She is currently an assistant professor and the Director of Advanced Studies for Reading Specialists & ESL at Georgian Court University in New Jersey (United States). Denise has over 25 years of experience in teaching multilingual learners and coaching their teachers in a variety of educational settings. Her book, Voices of Newcomers: Experiences of Multilingual Learners, has been honored as an outstanding teacher resource for multicultural education and is the 2023 recipient of Delta Kappa Gamma’s Educator Book Award.
