How to stress the stress
Adriana Bocu
Summary
In this interactive workshop, I will provide teachers with a brief introduction to the concepts of Pronunciation, Word, and Sentence Stress, and we will discuss the benefits of effectively introducing these concepts to our students. I will start with a warm-up activity on word stress with the participants, then move on to the next part of the workshop, in which participants take on the role of students and complete some activities on word stress. Then, I will present some activities on sentence stress, spotting the difference between stress timing and syllable timing, stressed and tonic syllables and different types of sentence stress. For the participants who need more confidence or are familiar with suprasegmental pronunciation, especially word and sentence stress, I will share some techniques and activities to help overcome these challenges, raise awareness of its use, and strengthen speaking and listening skills. At the end of the workshop, we'll explore why these activities aren't that common but can be helpful. Participants will also have an opportunity to go through other practical classroom activities, giving them new insight into how to help their students.
