How I helped my students snap out of their bad habits?
Melania Laszewska
Summary
My speech aims to explore the prevalent bad habits exhibited by students in educational settings, drawing on firsthand observations and pedagogical experiences. I will focus on identifying specific detrimental behaviours that impede learning and engagement. In my presentation, I will delve into the underlying causes of habits, such as psychological factors, environmental influences, the impact of digital distractions, and the role of procedural memory in reinforcing these behaviours. I will also examine the concept of the "valley of disappointment" — a phase where initial enthusiasm wanes and students may struggle to maintain new, positive habits — and its effects on students' academic performance and overall development. To address these challenges, the presentation will propose evidence-based strategies and interventions. These include techniques for promoting active learning and critical thinking, and utilizing technology effectively to enhance rather than hinder education. By highlighting practical solutions and sharing successful case studies, this presentation seeks to equip educators with the tools and insights necessary to mitigate the impact of bad habits on students' learning journeys, ultimately fostering a more productive and enriching educational experience.
