Reflections on Going Global
Debbie West
Summary
I would like us to take a look at how we can prepare students to study and work abroad and as a result to be more inclusive. Many programs have Erasmus or study abroad programs and the participants need to have some preparation to encounter this new situation. We usually look at the places where they are going and their expectations, but there is also the side of where the students are coming from and how will they be accepted or not into the new culture. Let's take a look at some parts of culture that are not necessarily visible. Let's look at some activities that can help prepare them, examine the different perspectives and hopefully result in having a spirit of openness to the situation. These perspectives affect how well they adapt and take advantage of the place and people where they will be for one semester to one year, which can be life changing for many of them.
Biodata
Debbie West, UC Berkeley grad, brought up in a military family, has done almost everything from teaching French to being International Student Advisor in the United States to now teaching English to all levels and ages here in France. An educator at heart, she sees education as broader than in a classroom and is definitely not very traditional in her methods. With a love for developing programs and an ever-present bank of ideas, there never seems to be enough time, energy and money to do everything. In teaching English, it has also enabled me to be in different places to help prepare students to use their language skills cross culturally.
