Summary
The workshop involves a demonstration of how it is possible (reflecting the current trends in learner demands) to teach more than just a 'chunk of language' in a typical EFL lesson. It is intended to demonstrate the feasibility of teaching elements of Global Skills (critical thinking and research skills) within the confines of an EFL classroom in order to gain the dual benefit of language refinement and enhanced, transferable skills that would be of benefit to a potential employer. As we all know today, English alone is no longer sufficient: it is necessary to provide learners with something more, and instead of focusing of ESP (which lacks transferability), intertwining language and Global Skills is the key to securing the future of language education. This workshop derives from an ongoing research project based at the University of Rzeszow which is intended to provide pre-service teachers with the tools they will need to equip their future students with an array of skills which goes far beyond simple language competence.
Biodata
Since 1999 I have been an EFL teacher based in Poland, who has evolved into an academic at the University of Rzeszow. As well as a range of academic publications, I have managed to maintain an active interest in teacher development and coaching for both experienced TEFLERs, and pre-service teachers at the University (and beyond). For over 20 years I have also been involved in the running of Pilgrims Young Learners, a prestigious UK-based pop-up language/activity camp in which I have been the Course Director, Academic supervisor and Vice-Principal.
