Why Stories Matter: Exploring
Tara Seekins
Summary
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s lecture “The Danger of a Single Story” has over 26 million views on YouTube. Her thesis is deceptively simple: single stories disregard complex realities in favor of conclusions that are incomplete, forming the basis of prejudice and stereotypes. This session will describe how students on three continents have engaged with this idea in their English language arts courses. It will offer suggestions for how secondary and post-secondary instructors might use this powerful message as a touchstone in their own curriculum development.
