Building Assessment Literacy: Student-Led Internal Assessment in IBDP English

Karolin Candan

Summary

This session shares how IBDP English B Higher Level students became active participants in building assessment literacy by unpacking the Internal Assessment (Individual Oral) criteria. Through collaborative analysis, students categorized descriptors and applied the rubric to sample recorded performances by justifying their grading decisions. They further engaged in crafting purposeful questions for parts 2 and 3 of the Internal Assessment and designed peer-led tasks that supported interactional flow and higher-order thinking. This hands-on, process-oriented approach not only strengthened their understanding of assessment standards but also promoted reflection, autonomy and deeper engagement in preparation for the high-stake oral assessment.
