Relation First: Engaging Neurodiverse Learners Through Positive Connection

Marta Figura-Wasielewska

Summary

Education hinges on relation — the authentic connections teachers build with students. In today’s classrooms, many neurodiverse learners feel unintelligent, disengage, and disrupt classes. This session explores how relationship-centered teaching—focusing on strengths, encouragement, and inclusion—reinvigorates learning. Drawing on research showing that strong teacher–student bonds boost engagement and academic outcomes , participants will discover practical strategies: avoiding harsh correction, celebrating small successes, and fostering a safe classroom climate. You’ll leave equipped to design lessons that maintain interest, reduce withdrawals, and empower every student to speak, participate, and thrive without fear of failure.
