Content and Language Learning via WhatsApp: American-Ukrainian Educational Insights

Malgorzata Durygin, Olena Kasatkina-Kubyshkina

Summary

This presentation offers a practical example of fostering cross-cultural content and language teaching and learning experience beyond the classroom via a semester-long WhatsApp group chat communication between the American students of an introductory course on Ukraine and the pre-service Ukrainian students of an EFL for cultivating global understanding. It also demonstrates the positive impact of students’ learning autonomy in on- and after-class activities on learning outcomes. Results, challenges, and evidence-based recommendations for incorporating parallel communication as an engaging and impactful content, language, and empathy-building pedagogical tool suitable for international collaborative educational practice will be provided.
