Developing higher-order thinking skills through grammar items for formative assessment

Tamara Kavytska

Summary

This talk focuses on developing higher-order thinking skills through the construction of grammar items for formative assessment. It examines the evolution of grammar testing from traditional discrete-point methods to modern integrative approaches that assess grammatical competence within meaningful communicative contexts. The talk covers essential principles of item writing, such as construct validity, reliability, and alignment with learning objectives. The speaker analyses various item types ranging from traditional multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank formats to more authentic performance-based tasks that integrate grammatical assessment with critical thinking and communicative competence evaluation. Special attention is given to common pitfalls and challenges in constructing grammar items.
