Prepared for surprise: Teacher training vs. teacher education

Alan Pulverness

Summary

Most teacher training is designed to equip teachers with the resources and techniques that will enable them first to survive, and later to flourish, in predictable situations. Whether training courses are driven by a standardised syllabus or by the particular demands of a school system, training is designed to equip teachers with a package of knowledge and skills that will meet the immediate demands of their present or future classrooms. This talk will suggest a broader conception of language teaching and learning, embracing intercultural communicative competence, learner autonomy and 21st-Century Skills, to produce a more sustainable model of teacher education.
