It’s Not Just About Counting: Dyscalculia in the Language Classroom

Ewa Grzelak-Takalska

Summary

Dyscalculia isn’t something learners leave behind in math class. It comes with them — into shops, daily life, and yes, language lessons. Often misunderstood as just a problem with numbers, dyscalculia also affects sequencing, time, direction, estimation, and other thinking patterns central to language learning. Teachers may overlook these signs or misread them as lack of effort. This session invites you to rethink what dyscalculia means for your classroom and your students — and to notice what might have gone unnoticed. Because when certain mental functions don’t work as expected, language learning gets stuck, too.

Biodata

I’ve been in language education for 20+ years, but working with neurodiverse adult students and those experiencing learning difficulties is a newer chapter and I’m still opening new doors. I get genuinely excited when hidden connections appear, especially when they help me reach students who don’t always fit the template.
