Unplugging Homo Algoritmicus: Critical Media Literacy for GenAI Times
Armanda Stroia
Summary
In today’s media-saturated world, learners often struggle to navigate the flood of (dis)information, biased narratives, and AI-generated content. Drawing on critical media pedagogy and Harari’s concept of Homo Algoritmicus, this session calls for integrating media education early. What if we employed research-informed strategies to empower learners to question problematic media messages rather than passively consume biased digital fast food? Imagine your learners creating counter ads to challenge stereotypes, fake-news multimodal detective stories or greenwashing-busting memes! The talk invites participants to reflect on the costs of uncritical media education and the transformative potential of embedding critical media literacy in ELT.
