How can we make sustainability in ELT more, er, sustainable?

Christopher Graham

Summary

It’s wonderful to see stakeholders across ELT thinking how they can be more sustainable in their practices. But there is a danger of fragmentation, with initiatives being piecemeal in approach and likely to fade away. We need to permanently embed sustainability, by creating a culture of sustainability. While cultural change very often comes from the ‘bottom upwards’, in our case from students and teachers, ultimately the changes have to be institution-driven in order to become permanently embedded in our schools, colleges and universities. We are all members of these institutions, so how can we be part of this cultural change?
