Big Words, Small Words… Lifting Learners into the Advanced Zone

Piotr Steinbrich

Summary

The talk examines how focused lexical work can support learners in progressing from B2 to C1 level. It considers a broad spectrum of vocabulary, ranging from high-frequency items commonly found in spoken interaction to more complex lexico-grammatical patterns characteristic of specific genres, registers, and styles. While the main emphasis is on productive use, the session also looks at the role of receptive, awareness-raising activities in fostering greater control and flexibility in output. By connecting insights from both receptive and productive practice, the session aims to show how targeted vocabulary work can contribute to learners’ overall development at the advanced level.
