Cognitive strategies in exam preparation: integrating psychology, logic, and language.

Olha Hlek

Summary

This session examines how integrating psychological insights can significantly enhance exam preparation for learners of English as a foreign language. Drawing from my academic background in crisis and extreme situation psychology, along with over a decade of experience preparing candidates for IELTS, TOEFL, CELPIP, Pearson English, and Cambridge exams (FCE–CPE), I will demonstrate practical approaches beyond test-oriented instruction. The focus will be on fostering emotional resilience, cognitive flexibility, and critical thinking in learners. By focusing attention on sustainable learning strategies, educators can support long-term language development while both equipping students to face high-stakes assessments with confidence and reducing their anxiety.
