Language teacher wellbeing: Three pillars that teachers can control
Deborah Azaryad Shechter
Summary
The wellbeing of language teachers is essential for a fulfilling career. This talk empowers teachers to take charge of their own wellbeing and that of their students. Despite challenges like limited institutional support and heavy workloads, teachers can prioritize their wellbeing by focusing on what they can control. I highlight three key pillars teachers can cultivate independently: strong teacher-student relationships, Foreign Language Teaching Enjoyment (FLTE), and Foreign Language Learning Enjoyment (FLE). By embodying kindness, empathy, enthusiasm, and professionalism, and by fostering positive emotions in the classroom, teachers can thrive and motivate students to engage in learning, regardless of external conditions.
