Low Stress, High Impact Strategies for Fostering Fluency
Jean Kirschenmann
Summary
Nation (1996, 2020) characterizes effective language programs as consisting of four integrated instructional strands: meaning-focused input, meaning-focused output, language-focused learning, and fluency development. This workshop addresses the often neglected fourth strand. Attendees will examine locally relevant materials and universally familiar classroom routines that foster fluency development. They will co-create several classroom-ready activities, plan for students to create others, and envision means for using them to build fluency without onerous demands on their time. Finally, they will consider how the conference theme—Back from the Future—suggests ways to focus on fluency without compromising other strands of a well-rounded language course.
