Ethical Integration of Generative AI in Academic Writing

Brendal Aformeziem

Summary

As generative AI tools proliferate in higher education, fundamental questions about authorship, originality, and academic integrity demand urgent attention. This early-stage research investigates the ethical integration of generative AI in academic writing practices within university contexts. Drawing on interdisciplinary literature spanning education technology, AI ethics, and writing studies, this study examines the emerging tensions between technological innovation and scholarly integrity. The research maps contested boundaries of 'acceptable use' while analysing how institutional policies and pedagogical approaches are evolving in response to these new co-creative relationships. This presentation outlines a preliminary conceptual framework that positions GenAI as a collaborative agent.
