Teaching during the times of war: challenges and coping mechanisms

Andriy Borovskiy

Summary

Despite the regular nightly strikes on Ukrainian cities and villages making headlines, life goes on, right? Bread gets baked, the metro trains run on schedule (unless there is a blackout caused by another rocket attack, of course), and English lessons proceed according to schedule. After all, the textbook content doesn't change, so why should the lessons? However, teaching and learning a foreign language are very closely intertwined with the learners' daily lives, their struggles and triumphs, defeats and moments of joy. Understandably, the harsh reality of war cannot be ignored. We will talk about dealing with it in the classroom.
