Teachers groups and associations: top down or grassroots up?

Susan Holden

Summary

Teachers join groups and associations for a variety of reasons. Some are personal – meeting colleagues, exchanging ideas, finding support. Others are teaching-based: discussing approaches, examining new materials. Whatever its structure, and whether it is large or small, the group is likely to exist within an organisational framework: local, regional, national or international. How can both personal needs and practical possibilities be catered for? Who sets the rules?
