Lexis, Speaking and the Non-Native Speaker Teacher

That much of our everyday language use is far more formulaic than traditionally imagined now seems widely accepted. However, there has been much debate as to whether such a view of language has any relevance for non-native speaker teachers (NNSTs) teaching English as an International Language. It has been claimed that lexis is far more culturally-rooted than grammar, that NNSTs lack sufficient cultural background to tackle lexis, that a lexical approach to language teaching will leave NNSTs in greater danger of being caught out by their students and so on. However, it is believed there are sound reasons why NNSTs have the upper hand when it comes to teaching lexically. This workshop intends to outline these reasons whilst also addressing the flexible cultural positions language can be utilised in, the lunacy of demonising translation and the wonders of local knowledge! All of this will be delivered with repeated reference to daily classroom realities!!
