IATEFL Wrocław Region and Teacher Training SIG workshop – 18 November 2017

This event was a great success, with the session led by Ewa Tarczyńska, a psychologist, therapist, and mediator. The title was: ‘Co robić aby nie zgredziec’  - Don’t be a fuddy-duddy – secrets to staying young at work.

The workshop was devoted to maintaining a desired level of engagement and appropriate energy expenditure during the academic/school year. Factors helping us to maintain self-motivation were discussed. There was ample advice on how to cope with occupational burnout, which results not so much from long-term job stress, as from inadequate coping strategies.
Burnout:
- frustration stemming from making a work/life/relationship investment which did not bring an expected reward
- a discrepancy between the effort made and the expected results
- exhaustion of mental and emotional resources .
Also, ideas were presented on how important it is to secure an optimum support system at work.
According to a Gallup Poll, one of the key determinants of productivity is having at least one friend at work. Relationships based on co-operation, trust and mutual inspiration constitute a source of positive energy, which may determine (job/life) satisfaction. A feeling of being fairly judged, recognition and praise from both the leader and colleagues (positive feedback) constitute important factors.
The workshop was primarily aimed at taking care of one’s well-being and feeling responsible for it in one’s work.
Some factors that influence our feeling accomplished and fulfilled:

- FoMO (fear of missing out)
- Multitasking
- Sprint, not a marathon
- Energy management
- Assertiveness
- Rest and relaxation
- Healthy lifestyle (diet, exercise)
- Enjoment and satisfaction
- Emotions under control
- Aims and involvement
