Assoc. Prof. Dr. Osman SOLMAZ
Critical Social Media Literacies in ELT: A Multiliteracies Perspective
Summary:
As social media increasingly shapes how learners communicate, developing critical social media literacies has become essential in English language education. This session presents practical, classroom-tested activities rooted in multiliteracies pedagogy (New London Group, 1996), aimed at bridging learners’ digital practices with language learning.
Two case studies illustrate this integration: one involving community-based Instagram narratives inspired by #humansofnewyork, and another task where learners create fictional social media profiles for characters from Dune, engaging with platforms such as Instagram, X, and LinkedIn. These activities promote multimodal composition, narrative awareness, and critical digital engagement.
By the end of the session, participants will be equipped with concrete strategies for designing tasks that align language development with learners’ digital lives, fostering both linguistic proficiency and critical media awareness—key skills for teaching in today’s digitally connected world.
