From Textbooks to Authentic Texts:
The Evolution of English Teaching Materials
Summary:
The session is composed of two parts. Firstly, dr Irmina Kotlarska will look at English learning materials from the 18th to the early 20th century and will show how they reflected changing goals and values. In the 18th century the focus was on grammar and literature, in the 19th on phrasebooks for travel and business, and in the early 20th on schoolbooks with cultural content. Many of the ideas and task types we know from today’s textbooks already had their earlier versions – just in different forms – with the same aim: effective language learning. Using authentic sources such as Aesop’s fables, travellers’ dialogues and school readers shaped by ideology, the session will also suggest practical classroom activities that adapt these historical materials to enrich lessons, spark reflection and engage learners creatively.
Secondly, dr Małgorzata Karczewska will show selected examples of EFL class activities based on the use of TED content are provided. Thanks to her experience as a Practical English Course teacher at the University of Zielona Góra, Małgorzata Karczewska authored an e-book including twenty chapters, each based on a TED lesson, in which a variety of exercises aiming at developing listening, speaking, writing skills as well as expanding vocabulary are given to educators and students. The topics are divided into four categories: Language and communication, The animal world, Medical issues and Psychology and well-being, each consisting of five chapters, which offers a wide selection of topics to choose from. During the meeting, several examples of these exercises will be presented and discussed in order to inspire teachers and students as the idea behind the use of TED content is to turn an English class into an adventure expanding knowledge not only of the language itself, but also of the world around us.
