Summary:
‘I have a text on page 17. How can I build a lesson around it?’
This very practical step-by-step workshop looks at the way experienced teachers build effective lessons around what is usually the engine of a Coursebook Unit: the text.
We will be aiming to answer questions such as:
- ‘How can I get my students interested in reading the text?’
- ‘How can I get them to engage with it?’
- ‘How can I relate the text to their own experiences?’
- ‘How can I use the text as a springboard to practice other skills such as speaking or writing?’
Now let us see whether I am a good mind-reader: I believe you are thinking to yourself: ‘Do all these things take long to prepare?’ and ‘Will I be able to apply the answers to the above questions to a wide range of Listening and Reading texts?
The answers are ‘No’ and ‘Yes’.

Nick Michelioudakis (B. Econ., Dip. RSA, MSc [TEFL]) has been active in ELT for many years as a teacher, examiner, presenter, and teacher trainer. He has travelled and given seminars and workshops in many countries all over the world.
He has written extensively on Methodology, though he is better known for his ‘Psychology and ELT’ articles in which he draws on insights from such disciplines as Marketing, Management and Social Psychology and which have appeared in numerous newsletters and magazines.
His areas of interest include Student Motivation, Learner Independence, Teaching one-to-one and Humour.
