This webinar is titled:
“Memory Tricks Mnemonic Devices and their Impact in Vocabulary Acquisition“
Summary:
This study examines the value of memory techniques used in L2 vocabulary acquisition. Fourteen participants were tasked with memorizing a list of vocabulary terms in a pseudo-language. Participants were divided into two groups, one where learners used mnemonic devices and one where they used repetition-based memorization as a comparison. They were then tested through direct translation and productive use in speech to demonstrate their acquisition of the words. While both groups achieved nearly identical accuracy mean results, the group using mnemonic devices showed more hesitation time between utterances. This suggests a potential detriment in success for the use of mnemonic devices in acquiring procedural competency in the short term. The results highlight the need for further research into the impact of mnemonic devices as strategies in helping language learners develop vocabulary for communicative competence.
During the webinar all participants will be provided with a certificate of participation, which they will be able to download.
IATEFL Poland members have priority of registration for this webinar.
