Two Brains in One Classroom: Divergent & Convergent Thinking in ESP – a webinar by Tamari Dolidze and Natia Vasadze
Dear Colleagues,
IATEFL Poland, Tamari Dolidze, Associate Professor of BSMA/PI, and Natia Vasadze, Associate Professor of BSMA
have the pleasure to invite you to the webinar:
“Two Brains in One Classroom: Divergent & Convergent Thinking in ESP”
which will take place on Wednesday, 22nd of April, from 20.30 to 21.30 CET.
Summary:
In English for Specific Purposes (ESP) classrooms, learners are expected not only to acquire domain-specific language but also to develop the cognitive skills required in professional environments. Among these skills, the ability to think both divergently and convergently plays a crucial role. Divergent thinking fosters creativity, idea generation, and flexibility in communication, while convergent thinking supports analytical reasoning, precision, and effective decision-making. However, these complementary thinking modes are rarely addressed explicitly in ESP pedagogy.
This webinar explores how integrating divergent and convergent thinking strategies can enhance language learning and professional competence in ESP contexts. Drawing on cognitive theory and task-based learning principles, the session will demonstrate how brainstorming, problem-based tasks, case studies, simulations, and structured writing activities can be designed to intentionally activate both thinking processes.
Participants will gain practical tools for designing classroom activities that balance creativity with accuracy, fluency with structure, and innovation with discipline. Examples from Business English and technical ESP contexts will illustrate how dual-thinking approaches prepare learners for authentic workplace communication.
During the webinar all participants will be provided with a certificate of participation, which they will be able to download.
IATEFL Poland members have priority of registration for this webinar.
Do not delay. The number of participants is limited.
