”Uncreative” writing: Writing in the Digital Age – Willow Barnosky’s webinar at IATEFL Poland

Dear Colleagues,

IATEFL Poland and Willow Barnosky, English Language Fellow through the U.S. Department of State’s English language Programs

have the pleasure to invite you to the webinar which will take place on 5th October 2020, between 20.30 and 21.30 CET.

”Uncreative” writing: Writing in the Digital Age

Many students find essay assignments intimidating because writing is viewed as a solitary task. American professor and writer Kenneth Goldsmith argues that writing should be approached as a collaborative effort in which borrowing and adapting existing texts is encouraged.

In this workshop, we are going to discuss some ideas from Goldsmith’s book, Uncreative Writing, and look at some examples of collaborative writing, including hermit crab essays and erasure poetry using the work of Olga Tokarczuk and Stanislaw Baranczak. We’ll explore the implications for our language classrooms and answer questions such as: How do “uncreative” writing activities allow quiet students to shine in communicative classes? How can we encourage a love of writing in our students? What’s the difference between creative borrowing and plagiarism? Come prepared to learn about (and share) ideas for writing, both creative and “uncreative!”
