Webinar: The Centrality of Communicative Competence in English Language Teaching and Assessment

Dear Colleagues,

IATEFL Poland, Alicja Gałązka and Alex Thorp

have the pleasure to invite you to the webinar

which will take place on

Thursday, 21st January 2021, between 20.30 and 21.30, CET.

This webinar will concern:

The Centrality of Communicative Competence

As English teachers, we understand that at the heart of our teaching is the aim of facilitating learners in their functional use of the language, in the ability to communicate in real-world scenarios both effectively and efficiently. This session considers the original models of communicative competence, seeking to unpack exactly what skills a learner of any language needs to acquire to be able to communicate in this way, considering not only linguistic and discourse competences, but also sociolinguistic and strategic skills.

We go on to explore how more recent models of interactional competence have emerged, giving insight into how the complex interface of cognitive and social dimensions influence the efficacy of a learner’s communication. Finally, through consideration of contemporary English tests, we will explore the challenge of operationalising these models into assessments, discussing how we can adequately test these competencies in the contemporary communicative assessment.
