“LISTEN VERY CAREFULLY, I SHALL SAY THIS ONLY ONCE” - how to spice up your listening lessons and engage your students
This iconic ‘Allo ‘Allo! catchphase helps me explain the content of my workshop and the idea behind it. When I was offered to teach listening I was really excited. However, some questions entered my head: Does it mean 90 minutes of non-stop listening every single week? Does it mean 90 minutes of “fill in the gaps”, "multiple choice” exercises all the time? What can I do to make lessons more exciting? What can I do to avoid monotony and boredom in the classroom? Equipped with my creativity, spontaneity mingled with my 20 years of experience in teaching and teacher training, with a little help from you tube, exam sheets, games and quizzes, I did manage to run listening classes in an engaging and interesting way. Thus, the aim of this workshop is to show some good teaching practice: how to take advantage of traditional exam sheets and spice up listening lessons at the same time. I am going to present how to revise listening activities to engage students, how to introduce active listening, and how to maintain a positive mindset in the classroom. The workshop is suitable for university teachers, secondary school teachers, and everyone intrigued by the quote. The workshop is a follow-up to my live lesson “My name’s BOND”.
