“ChatGPT as a Tool in Teaching Academic Writing”

Summary:

This presentation describes an experiment performed as part of a C1 level academic writing course, in which undergraduate students at Wrocław University of Science and Technology were tasked with writing a research report using ChatGPT as an aid and as a research object at the same time. After studying the relevant literature, the students were instructed to conduct an experiment on the limitations of ChatGPT and then to use the tool in the process of writing a research report that would follow academic standards and format. The experiment shows that students positively responded to an ambitious and challenging task as they practiced writing clear, logical, and disciplined texts. It provides an example of how such AI tools as ChatGPT can be successfully incorporated into, rather than banned from, an English language classroom.
